INSECT INFECTIONS


Mites

Mite are staying as black or gray dot of under the leaf and absorbs the juice. Then gradually spreads throughout the leaf.It is a species of insect that is invisible to the naked eye and quickly spreads to other plants. Mite are also cause the spread of viral diseases.In dry and hot climates they increase their population in a very short period. Mites can easily damage orchids as well as flowers.

Remedies for mite damage

1. Separation of mite-damaged plant from other plants.

2. 80% Sulfur-containing or Abamectin , Hexthiazox Application of insecticide such as.

3. Application of natural pesticides.

4. Temporary cessation of fertilizer use.

5. Should be cut and burned of mite-damaged leaves.


Flourbug

A juice-sucking an insect . flourbug is living on the leaves and stems of the orchid plant . They are sucking the sap of the plant and spread rapidly.They also interfere with the growth of the plant.

Remedies for Flourbug damage

1.They can be controlled with Fipronil,Imidacloprid insecticide.


Aphids

They suck the sap from the leaves and help spread the virus.

Remedy for Aphids damage

1.They can be controlled with Thiamethoxam insecticide.


The larva that damages the buds

Takes the form of a mosquito and is about 2 mm long With the onset of flowering, the lay eggs in the flower buds . The larvae eating the tissues of the flower buds. This cause the buds to grind, bend, the flower buds become wet and rot, and the color changes of flowers.

Remedies for the larva that damages the buds

1.Use Marshell 20 or Admaire insecticide with the onset of flower buds.

2.Apply an insecticide containing kohomba.

3.Apply the recommended amount of the Diazinon insecticide packet granulated to the medium of the orchid pot.

4.Yellow sticky boards are available in the market and its can be installed near orchids plants.Appling grease on the yellow polythene and keep it closer the orchid plants.


Slugs and Snails

These creatures doing most of the damage to orchids between night 7 and 9 pm . Coming to the plant they are very fond of eating the apical,young shoots, young leaves, flower buds and petals of blooming flowers.Therefore the growth of the plant is poor and some plants are destroyed.

Remedies for Slugs and Snails

1. Capture and remove of them as soon as seen.

2. Sprinkle with salt and ash.

3. Laying of meta cubes.

4. Remove the hiding places of these animals and keep them clean.


Stem worms

They cause great damage to plants such as Dendrobium wanda.It is difficult to find until the plant is destroyed.The moth The eggs laying on the leaves and the larva stays in the trunk and eats the internal tissues. Cellization occurs are between the pieces of charcoal, tiles and middle of trunk.

Remedies for Stem worms

1.They can be controlled with diazinon insecticide.


Leaf-eating caterpillars

They are very fond of eating flower petals, leaves, new shoots and buds.

Remedies for Leaf-eating caterpillars

1.They can be controlled with Chlorfluazuron insecticide.


Scaly insects

Scaly insects are small oval-shaped insects.Absorbs the juice and usually damages the leaves.It is also found on the trunk in severe cases.They are difficult to control as their bodies are covered with a tight covering . They are carriers the viru.

Remedies for Scaly insects

1.They can be controlled with Fipronil,Imidacloprid insecticide.


Yellow beetles

This insect and larvae eat leaf, buds and flowers. Also makes holes in flowers.Their eggs are found on the flower and on the plants.Pila stage is also found among plants and they appear as cottons like material on the trunk.

Remedies for Yellow beetles

1.They can be controlled with Imidacloprid insecticide.


Cockroaches

Cockroaches is a very harmful insect and eats young leaves, buds and flowers.

FUNGAL INFECTIONS


Diyamalan kaam - Damping off

The disease is most common in orchids of all species such as Dendrobium, Vanda, Catalia, and Phalanopsis.Excess water supply can lead to this disease.In the early stages of the disease, small opaque spots appear on the lower part of the trunk and gradually turn brown.

Remedies for Diyamalan kaam

1.Supply only the required amount of water.

2.Separation of diseased plants from healthy plants.

3.Captan,Thiram fungicides can control the disease.


Leaf and apical rot

The disease is most common in orchids of all species such as Dendrobium, Vanda and Oncidium. It is a fungal disease that occurs during the rainy season.The leaves at the apex of the orchid become discolored and die.It then spreads downward from the apical part of the plant.

Remedies for Leaf and apical rot

1.Removal of infected leaves.

2.Spraying a fungicide containing metalaxyl.


Anthracnose

The disease is most common in orchids of all species such as vanda and Aranda.Yellowish brown spots appear on the leaves. Then these spots become large and dark brown.Because this the leaves to turn yellow and shrink.

Remedies for Anthracnose

1.Cutting off the diseased leaf section.

2.Propioneb and mancozeb fungicides can control the disease.


Yellowing of leaves

The disease is most common in Dendrobium Orchids.It is a fungal disease that is very common during the rainy season. Mature leaves haveing light yellow spots which gradually turn black and then fall off.

Remedies for Yellowing of leaves

1.Removal of infected leaves.

2.Mancozeb fungicides can control the disease.
